The art of Reflexology

Reflexology

Natural healing is an art of which we are our own masters.

Reflexology is a natural form of therapy which is non-invasive and inoffensive that facilitates the prevention of sicknesses, helps reduce stress, promotes relaxation and is a natural healer. It focuses on stimulating the different reflex points found on the bottom of the feet which correspond to each system in the body.

Each point is massaged with the hands using a specific technique to stimulate these points efficiently. The main goal of reflexology is to find or conserve the natural balance and health of each system.

Reflexology can benefit various situations and problems

The practice of reflexology helps with the treatment of conditions and pathologies but also improves quality of life and well-being. Listed below are some conditions where reflexology can be particularly helpful:

Infants

Infants can encounter difficulties sleeping due to several reasons. Common issues we see in babies include teething, eye and ear complaints, troubles with indigestion, colic, and nasal congestion amongst others. The benefits of reflexology are useful in these cases. Not only will the baby experience pain relief, but the parents too will be able to find a more harmonious and consistent sleep pattern.

Diabetes

Living with diabetes is challenging. Having to deal with the highs and lows of blood sugar regulation or poor blood circulation, quality of life is affected on how well you can manage those challenges. Reflexology has a considerable and rapid impact on both. Whether insulin dependent or not, the practice of reflexology helps increase blood flow to the areas most affected by diabetes and in turn promotes better pancreas, kidney, and liver function.

Hormonal Imbalance

Women face a lifetime of hormonal fluctuations. Period cramps and heavy blood loss is a common concern for women at a younger age but can still haunt them later in their adult years. Reflexology can help alleviate menstrual cramps as well as depressing symptoms due to fluctuating hormones during a woman’s menstrual cycle.

One major hormonal change women find particularly difficult to manage is menopause. Menopause has multiple effects on a woman’s body but also her quality of life. Whether it be hot flashes, weight gain or inconsistent sleep patterns, reflexology can help the body find the proper balance so that women can start to feel like themselves again.

Articulatory pain and back aches

Bodily aches and pains alongside back problems are common regardless of age. In my experience, I have seen cases where clients have tried all sorts of different methods to alleviate daily pain. These can include a constant intake of medications to seeing different chiropractors but to no avail. Reflexology works indirectly on the problem areas of the body without direct contact and the results can be particularly relieving.

Cancer

Living with cancer is psychologically and physically demanding. Common side effects such as fatigue, nausea, anxiety, troubles sleeping, and bodily aches and pains can be alleviated through the technique used in reflexology.

Some of the main benefits of reflexology include:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Reduced pain and nausea
  • Stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • Increased energy
  • Post-surgery recuperation
Anxiety and Depression

Studies have shown that anxiety and depression are on the rise amongst our youth and showing up at a younger age than before. These mental health issues are a reality for individuals at any given age and impair daily functioning. Reflexology provides the opportunity to find relaxation, offering a calm space where one can feel listened to and cared for by stimulating the proper reflexes that help with mood disturbances.

Athletes and Exercisers

Sport and physical activity can at times take a toll on the body. Elite, recreational athletes and exercisers are often faced with injuries. Certain injuries require medical intervention where others require rest and recuperation. Whether it be an injury or bodily fatigue from training, reflexology can help relieve aches and facilitate rehabilitation to return to sport faster and better.

What are the restrictions to doing reflexology?

Everyone is considered a candidate for reflexology but there are a few cases when it is not recommended:

    • Pregnant women in their first trimester, especially if the pregnancy is considered risky. Check-in with your gynocologist before booking a session.
    • If the patient suffers from a skin disease that is contagious.
    • If the patient has fever as the body is already fighting to get rid of toxins.
    • If the patient suffers from a thrombosis. The manipulation of a reflexology session can displace the blood clot. Days after an operation. It’s important to check-in with the surgeon before booking a session.

    My philosophy

We live in a world where we are often stressed and don’t take care of our bodies. We find ourselves focused on the external sources of remedies that we forget to reconnect within and find the vital energy our bodies already inhabit.

Reflexology is not an exact science but instead relies on touch, stimulation of trigger points on the feet and the allowance of nature to take its course. What we don’t see on the outside but what we feel on the inside can be found on our feet. My goal as your therapist is to listen and provide an environment where you feel safe and comfortable to de-connect with what is going on around and re-connect with what is going on within.

My name is Tanya Stenstrom. I am originally Swedish but have been raised in the United States and in Switzerland. I finished my studies in 2002 at Boston University with a Bachelors degree in Hospitality Administration. In 2004, I then went on and continued my studies in Hotel Management and in 2005 finished my Masters degree at the Hotel School of Lausanne.

I love working with and taking care of people. It is for that reason that in 2018 I decided to go back to studying and started a training in reflexology. I have since then been passionate about this wonderful form of natural therapy.

I welcome you in a serene environment in the heart of Meinier countryside.
